FEDERAL PROGRAMS

Language Acquisition/Sheltered English Immersion

The main objective of the Language Acquisition program, the ELL Department, is to provide Somerton's students the skills necessary to speak, read, and write proficiently in the English language as measured by AZELLA (AZ English Language Learners Assessment). The AZELLA test shows the growth in the student's individual level of understanding in these three areas. Students are monitored and reassessed yearly and also can be tested up to three times per year for purposes of reclassification to Fluent English Proficient Status.

All ELL students are taught in SEI classrooms by trained Highly Qualified teachers in English language Development for four hours daily as per state law. The 4-hour ELD (English Language Development) block provides English Language Learners the skills necessary to succeed in school.
