Superintendent’s Corner

Dear Parents, Teachers and Education Community of Somerton,

Summer is upon us! What a great year it has been! We have made progress in transitioning our system to meet the requirements of AzMerit, the new State Test. Students and teachers are adjusting to the new expectations and we are thankful for the help our parents and community have given us!

As we look toward summer I see a great opportunity! Summer is a chance for students to practice real life Math and Language skills. A rich summer experience of conversations with adults, every day Math like cooking following a recipe and reading interesting literature can do a lot to help students not only maintain the skills they have acquired but learn new and different applications.

I hope you will take advantage of the local library program this summer and spend at least 20 minutes every day reading. Playing indoor board games with your child helps them practice Math and Reading skills. The time they spend with you teaches them the skills and character qualities they will use for their lifetime. English or Spanish or any language, the important thing for you child is to practice expressing himself or herself, accurately and fluently. It is good that a student can speak English well, but even better if they can speak a second language also. Children who are truly bilingual have more job opportunities.

We look forward to learning with you next year!

Laura Noel, Ed.D.
